How to beat jet lag

Your body clock can be reset. Light is the key.

Before you fly

For big time differences, shift your bedtime by an hour a day for a few days in the direction of your destination.

On the plane

  • Set your watch to destination time as soon as you board.
  • Sleep or stay awake according to the destination's clock.
  • Drink water and limit alcohol and caffeine.

On arrival

  • Get outside in daylight, especially in the morning after flying east.
  • Eat meals at local times.
  • Keep naps short, under 30 minutes, and before mid-afternoon.

East versus west

Flying east is generally harder because you have to fall asleep earlier. Allow roughly a day per time zone to fully adjust, and plan easy activities for your first day.
