Trip planning checklist
From first idea to boarding pass, in the order that saves the most money and stress.
Three to six months before
- Choose when to go. Use the season calendar on each Voyaer destination page, or browse where to go by month.
- Set a daily budget. Our destination pages give rough per-person daily costs for budget, mid-range and luxury travel.
- Check entry rules. Visas, electronic authorisations and passport validity.
- Book flights. Prices are usually best a few months out for international trips.
- Book places that sell out: peak-season hotels, Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail, Sagrada Família, sought-after restaurants.
One month before
- Buy travel insurance.
- Check vaccinations and health advice with a travel clinic.
- Tell your bank you'll be travelling and check foreign transaction fees.
- Sketch a loose day plan: one major sight per morning, slower afternoons.
The week before
- Download offline maps, transport apps and boarding passes.
- Check the weather and repack using our packing list.
- Arrange airport transfers for late arrivals.
On the road
Leave room for the unplanned. The best travel memories are rarely on the itinerary: a market you stumbled into, a café a local recommended, a long lunch that turned into an afternoon.
